The recent arrest of a recent suspected terrorist, his dad and another man reminded me of something I’ve always wondered about.  Every so often since 9/11 we hear of a person or group being arrested for some kind of terrorist plot.  But there are never any successful attacks in America.  The only one I can think of since the twin towers is the black Muslim who shot two at a military recruitment center in Arkansas.  But the number of suspected terrorist arrested in the last eight years seems endless.  Here are some headlines.  Some are black Muslims, some Middle Easterners, some white Americans and some Hispanic.  The common thread is that they’re all much more likely to get caught than pull anything off.

I could go on for a very long time. 

I remember that during the 1990s when kids were shooting up schools every few years or so there weren’t tens of unsuccessful plots for every one carried out.  A student killing his classmates and then himself seemed far more common than a plot to do so being discovered.  So my question is this-if kids who want to kill people and don’t care if they die can often get away with committing mass murder in their schools then why can’t Muslims, who want to die and have the whole country as a target, do so?  And how is the government able to catch so many terrorists?  

Here are two theories.

• There really are no Muslim terrorists

Sure, there’s Bin Laden in a cave out there fantasizing about being a world historical figure, but there really aren’t many people out there who are going to listen to him.  Iraqis, Afghanis, Palestinians and presumably other Muslims will fight you to the death if you invade their country and occupy their land, but there really aren’t any who are motivated to go to the other side of the world and attack innocent civilians for religious or political reasons.  I have to suspect that if there were, with our open borders, they would be able to do so.  So why are their so many “terror” arrests?  The government is probably going around setting people up or entrapping low IQ types.  The state is certainly willing and capable of doing this.  Look at the case of white nationalist Matt Hale, who was sentences to thirty years in prison for supposedly soliciting the murder of a judge.  He was convicted on the basis of conversations he had on the phone with an FBI informant.

The following day, Hale and the source had a recorded conversation in which the man told Hale he was working on getting Lefkow’s address, Weissman said.

“When we get it, we going to exterminate the rat?” the source asked, according to a transcript Weissman read.

“Well, whatever you want to do basically,” Hale allegedly responded.

“The Jew rat,” the source said.

“You know, my position has always been that I, you know, I’m going to fight within the law . . . but that information has been provided; if you wish to do anything yourself, you can,” Hale responded, according to Weissman.

In a second conversation recorded at Hale’s East Peoria home on Dec. 17, the source told Hale that plans were in place to kill Lefkow and the hit would occur soon, Weissman said.

Though Hale did not directly endorse the killing, he “never instructed the source not to carry out the plan,” (italics added) Weissman said.

That’s pretty remarkable.  If they can do this, I’m guessing that FBI agents are going into mosques, saying “I’m blowing up the Sears Tower next week” and throwing anybody who smiles politely into solitary confinement for the rest of his life.   

• Possibility Two: Law Enforcement Is Doing a Really Good Job

Muslims are only two percent of the American population.  That’s 6 million of people.  Only half are males.  Say only a third of those males are within their jihadi prime (18 to mid-thirties).  That’s only 1 million people you have to watch, or 0.3% of the population, all heavily concentrated in certain parts of the country and who hang out at obvious places like mosques.  You wouldn’t need that many agents to infiltrate the community and always know what’s going on.  This would entail massive racial profiling and of course they’d never admit that this is what they do.  Likewise, any Muslim visiting is watched very closely.  

Possibility two presupposes that government is politically incorrect and competent while possibility one just assumes that government is evil.  Since governments are much more often evil than they are either competent or (in our days and in the West) politically incorrect I think possibility one explains a lot more than possibility two.  

Look at this way.  If a Korean student could get a gun, go on a rampage and kill dozens at a university, why can’t a Muslim do the same?  He would leave a suicide note behind promising that there would be more college shootings to come.  Higher education in this country would be shut down for at least a year! (look what happened with air travel after 9/11.  If you don’t think one case would be enough, just imagine the hysteria after two or three Muslims shot up different colleges within a week.)  If the terrorist(s) is/are lucky, the American government may even go invade another Muslim country in response and continue to bankrupt itself. There’s simply no way to stop terrorism in this day and age and if there was any percentage of the American population that wanted to kill large amounts of people and desired to die themselves while doing it we would be seeing terrorist attacks all the time-not just one major attack followed by a decade of dozens of arrests and no successful followup.

Paul Craig Roberts said the same something similar in an article earlier this year entitled “Why No Neocon Assassinations?  Because the War on Terrorism Is a Hoax.”   

According to US government propaganda, terrorist cells are spread throughout America, making it necessary for the government to spy on all Americans and violate most other constitutional protections. Among President Bush’s last words as he left office was the warning that America would soon be struck again by Muslim terrorists.

If America were infected with terrorists, we would not need the government to tell us. We would know it from events. As there are no events, the US government substitutes warnings in order to keep alive the fear that causes the public to accept pointless wars, the infringement of civil liberty, national ID cards, and inconveniences and harassments when they fly.

The most obvious indication that there are no terrorist cells is that not a single neocon has been assassinated…

The US deals with al Qaeda and Taliban by assassinating their leaders, and Israel deals with Hamas by assassinating its leaders. It is reasonable to assume that al Qaeda would deal with the instigators and leaders of America’s wars in the Middle East in the same way.

Today every al Qaeda member is aware of the complicity of neoconservatives in the death and devastation inflicted on Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Gaza. Moreover, neocons are highly visible and are soft targets compared to Hamas and Hezbollah leaders…

Neocons do not have Secret Service protection. Dreadful to contemplate, but it would be child’s play for al Qaeda to assassinate any and every neocon. Yet, neocons move around freely, a good indication that the US does not have a terrorist problem.

If, as neocons constantly allege, terrorists can smuggle nuclear weapons or dirty bombs into the US with which to wreak havoc upon our cities, terrorists can acquire weapons with which to assassinate any neocon or former government official…

The “war on terror” is a hoax that fronts for American control of oil pipelines, the profits of the military-security complex, the assault on civil liberty by fomenters of a police state, and Israel’s territorial expansion.

The centrality of terrorism to political discourse shows how bad at reasoning most people are.  Crime and car accidents kill many more people than terrorism does (it would take quite a few 9/11s a year to equal the death toll one of those two) but if a president said “My first job is to protect you from crime/traffic accidents,” he would be laughed out of office.  Yet George Bush could tell Larry King “The most important job I have had — and the most important job the next president is going to have — is to protect the American people from another attack,” with a straight face and nobody thinks it’s strange.  I’m sure Obama has said similar things.  

Roberts is right.  The war on terrorism is nothing but an excuse to violate civil liberties, expand the state and fight harmful wars.
