Cops are using Facebook to get underage drinkers.

Facebook stalking is the latest tool the La Crosse Police Department has employed to crack down on underage drinking, using photos obtained from the social media web site to issue underage drinking citations. But those recently charged, largely college students, argue police are going too far and violating their privacy.

Adam Bauer, a 20-year-old UW-La Crosse sophomore, is one of those students. Unexpectedly, he says, he received an e-mail this past October from La Crosse police officer Al Iverson, asking him to come to the police station. Bauer didn’t know why he was being called to the station and he claims Iverson told him he wasn’t in trouble. After Bauer arrived, Iverson presented photos of him at a party with a beer his hand. Bauer was later cited for underage drinking…

Bauer says La Crosse police created a spurious Facebook account under the name of “Jenny Anderson” and obtained the photos after Bauer accepted a friend request from that account. While police have not admitted to this, screenshots of the images as they appeared on the Facebook site, which were obtained by the Post from the La Crosse Police Department under Wisconsin’s public records law, are consistent with Bauer’s claim. 

Britain bans photoshopped ads that create an unrealistic standard of beauty.  When their population is dark enough they’ll ban pictures with blond hair and blue eyes as it would present an unattainable ideal for the typical Englishwoman.

A sheikh tells Lebanese children about the Palestinian female martyr Wafa Idris.  She had an interesting fan here in the states, one Dr. William Pierce. 

Two weeks ago, on January 27, another of these Palestinian “terrorists” carried out a suicide bombing in Jerusalem, killing one Israeli and wounding 100 others. The bomber was Wafa Idris, a 27-year-old Palestinian woman who lived in Ramallah and worked as a volunteer nurse, riding in ambulances and providing emergency care in field hospitals for Palestinians wounded by Israeli soldiers. Wafa was no wild-eyed Muslim fundamentalist or fanatical Palestinian nationalist. She was not involved in politics and was not even considered to be a Muslim by her friends and family. She didn’t even wear the traditional head covering for Palestinian women. She was described by everyone who knew her as a friendly, open, caring, and fun-loving young woman. She used her spare time to give free lessons in language and mathematics to children in the Ramallah refugee camp. She simply had had enough of seeing her people humiliated and brutalized and murdered by Jews. She had had enough Palestinian children die in her arms after they were shot by Israeli soldiers. She had taken care of enough Palestinian children who had lost an eye or a leg at the hands of the Israelis.

She herself had been shot at repeatedly by Israeli soldiers while she was on ambulance duty and was wearing her Red Crescent uniform, and on three occasions she had been wounded by rubber bullets. Israelis consider shooting at Palestinian medical personnel to be a sport. On January 27 Wafa had had enough and decided to hit back…

…let me tell you, when America fights against idealistic young women like Wafa Idris and for murderous thugs like Ariel Sharon, it should be clear to everyone but the most clueless, flag-waving yahoos that we are fighting on the wrong side.

It’s Hipsters Vs. Orthodox Jews in a New York Neighborhood 

Groups of bicycle-riding vigilantes have been repainting 14 blocks of Williamsburg roadways ever since the city sandblasted their bike lanes away last week at the request of the Hasidic community.

The Hasids, who have long had a huge enclave in the now-artist-haven neighborhood, had complained that the Bedford Avenue bike paths posed both a safety and religious hazard.

But Baruch Herzfeld, who has tried to bridge the gap between hipsters and Hasids with a bike-rental program, said safety is not the issue so much as xenophobia.

“They don’t want the hipsters in their neighborhood,” he said. “It’s like in Howard Beach back in the day when they didn’t want black people in the neighborhood.”

The Hipsters were planning to fight back with a topless protest.  They ended up bothering the Jews with their clothes on on account of the weather.  If only all Jews were religious fundies maybe they’d be allies.  

Doctor and CEO of a chemical company Kirk Maxey has fathered 400 children through sperm donation.

When Maxey was a medical student at the University of Michigan, his first wife, a nurse at a fertility clinic, persuaded him to start donating sperm to infertile couples. Maxey became the go-to stud for the clinic because his sperm had a high success rate of making women pregnant, which brought in good money for the clinic. Maxey himself made about $20 a donation, but says he was motivated to donate more out of a strong paternal instinct and sense of altruism. “I loved having kids, and to have these women doomed to wandering around with no family didn’t seem right, and it’s easy to come up with a semen donation,” he says. “You would get a personal phone call from a nurse saying, ‘The situation is urgent! We have a woman ovulating this morning. Can you be here in a half hour?’ “

How many years of evolution will it take for all men to give up on sex and just line up outside donation centers?  

Maxey, now the CEO of Cayman Chemical, a 300-person global pharmaceutical company, says back then he just “didn’t think about it a lot.” He didn’t have to. When he began volunteering, he wasn’t asked to take any genetic tests and received no psychological screening or counseling. He merely signed a waiver of anonymity, locked himself in a room with a cup and a sexy magazine, and didn’t consider the emotional or genetic consequences for another 30 years. Both his cavalier attitude and the clinic’s lax standards, Maxey says, explain why he may have so many offspring. But now a fierce conscience is catching with his robust procreative drive. When he’s not running his company, Maxey has become a devoted advocate for better government regulation of the sperm-donor business. He is also making his genome public through Harvard’s Personal Genome Project, and hopes that the information collected there might one day help his offspring and their mothers. “I think it was quite reckless that sperm banks created so many offspring without keeping track of their or my health status,” he says. “Since there could be [many families] that could have to know information about my health, this is my effort to correct the wrong.”

Maxey began donating before sperm banking became the big visible business it is today, where single women and couples can purchase STD-free, Ivy League, celebrity-look-alike sperm that has been quarantined and meets FDA mandates. But, in the ’70s and ’80s, the business operated behind a veil of secrecy. A man could clandestinely make some extra cash by donating to an infertile couple, and more often than not the ob-gyn, not the prospective families, would choose the sperm—his favorite tennis partner, perhaps, or in the case of Kirk Maxey, the handsome, blue-eyed, Nordic husband of his nurse.

Once in a while, they let the truth slip through.  We can only say whites are the most beautiful in passing. 

Now the confluence of genetic science and an increased awareness around the consequences of sperm donation is changing the game—and potentially the lives of Maxey’s offspring. Today sperm donation is no longer a shadow business, partially because infertility, single motherhood, and homosexual parenting have become more socially acceptable. (The California Cryobank alone now sells an average of 30,000 vials of sperm a year.) At the same time, donors and offspring have begun to connect though genetic testing and Web sites like the Donor Sibling Registry. In 2007 two of Maxey’s offspring, Ashley and Caitlyn Swetland, who are now 21 and 18, used the site to find Maxey, who had been a registered user since 2005. The sisters lived just 45 minutes away from Maxey, and soon began visiting a few times a year, going rock climbing with Maxey and his son or meeting up at an old-fashioned-style ice-cream parlor. No other children have come forward, but as Maxey’s relationship with Ashley and Caitlyn progressed, he began to think about the consequences of his earlier donations.

“I had this ‘Oh my God’ moment, thinking, how many kids have been produced?” he says. “I thought the doctors were keeping track of each birth, but when I realized they weren’t, I began to worry. What if they start dating one another?” He also began to worry about their genetic health. “I wanted to know if I have anything totally lethal or deranged or recessive in my genes that I may have passed along.”
